Poem: The Things We Carry

China, 2005, by Peggy Goetz

Things We Carry

Boxes and bags
some sealed shut
some open like luminaries
some hold us back, so heavy
we can barely  push forward
or the surprises
we forget  we have along.

All those things we haven’t  shared
that ultimately will not matter.
Put down the load and let's
run free.

Luminaries, from publicdomainphotos.com

This was written in response to a prompt from writing friends: a book title "Everything I Never Told You," by Celeste Ng. I am posting this at dVerse | Poets Pub, where others who took this challenge have also posted.

yeah - let's run and share freely... it is not good to carry too many unsaid words around with us...they can weigh heavier than steel..

i guess it is all in what we choose to carry...because they will either set us back...or set us free...

Thanks for taking the challenge from Gabriella and myself. Smiles. (We will put your link on our blogs as well.)

So true, in the end a lot of things will not matter. We definitely need to cut ourselves a little slack & run free for as long as we can! I enjoyed your perspective, Peggy.

We need to be mindful of what we share so that what is momentous does not get drowned in a wider mumble. Interesting take on the challenge, Peggy!

I love the message Peggy ~ These heavy loads hold us back and ultimately those we haven't shared will not matter ~

I absolutely love the last line Peggy. What a wonderful attitude to have. I read a few of the others who responded to this prompt. I didn't write to it, but it made me think a lot. Enjoyed your take on this.

Your top photo is astonishing, Peggy. He is loaded like a Himalayan sherpa! I love your poem - we all need to put down a lot of what we carry and ease our burdens - well said!

Seems like a few of us have "what's in the backpack" curiosity going on right now! Wonderful pairing of verse and photo in response to the prompt.

Baggage free is the way to travel

How true. :-) We need to unload those that we do not need. Although, the hard part there is determining which is needed and which is not.

Sometimes the baggage is what hold us back.. The wish to stay instead of finding and renewing...

An excellent contribution to the themefrom Mary and Gabriella.

Oh yes, let's dump that baggage. Most of it is unnecessary! Guilty as charged.... ;)

This is a very nice metaphor of our humanity . Of course, your title reminds me of Tim O'Brien's great book, "The Things They Carried". I liked your poem very much ....
